"Smart Planning in Digital Era" Online Exhibition
Hong Kong is a high-density city and it would be difficult to have a clear grasp of the actual environment if town planning is simply based on 2D plans. Not only has the Planning Department developed the 3D Planning and Design System to visualise the cityscape of Hong Kong in 3D environment and integrate with existing planning information that assists town planners to map out the future city blueprint for Hong Kong, we also make use of various smart technologies to facilitate our planning work. In the "Smart Planning in the Digital Era" exhibition, the Planning Department shall showcase an array of IT initiatives leveraging the latest innovation and technology to facilitate smart planning in Hong Kong. Augmented Reality (AR) will be adopted to help illustrate the main features of these IT initiatives, namely Town Planning Information System; Statutory Planning Portal 2; the operation of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles; 3D photo-realistic models and land use classification under Land Utilisation Map in Hong Kong. Besides, the key features of the 3D Planning and Design System (e.g. visualisation of multi-layer data in 3D environment, generation of design schemes and use of planning/ urban design tools) will also be highlighted in the exhibition.

"Relocation of Sha Tin Sewage Treatment Works to Caverns" Thematic Exhibition
To enable the public to gain a better understanding of the project of “Relocation of Sha Tin Sewage Treatment Works to Caverns”, the Drainage Services Department (DSD) will hold the thematic exhibition at City Gallery from 2 December 2020 to 14 January 2021. Through videos, display panels, computer games and physical model, the thematic exhibition will introduce the project’s latest development and innovative technology applied.
There is a pressing need to increase land supply for various uses by sustainable and innovative approaches to support social and economic development in Hong Kong. Rock cavern development is one of the feasible approaches to release our land resources. The Sha Tin STW is earmarked for relocation to a number of caverns to be excavated in Nui Po Shan opposite Shing Mun River. Sha Tin STW is the largest secondary STW in Hong Kong. Its relocation to caverns could release about 28 hectares of land on the existing Sha Tin STW site for other uses that benefit the public and improve the living environment of the district.
The future Sha Tin STW relocated in a cavern complex will be the largest of its kind in Hong Kong. The relocation plan will be implemented by stages, including site preparation and access tunnel construction, main caverns construction and upstream sewerage collection works, sewage treatment facilities installation, as well as decommission and demolition of the existing Sha Tin STW.

International Museum Day 2020, Hong Kong
Museums for Equality: Diversity and Inclusion
In 1977, the International Council of Museums (ICOM) designated 18 May as the annual International Museum Day (IMD) to raise public awareness of the important role that museums play in society. The Leisure and Cultural Services Department has been responding to this important appeal since 2001 by organising IMD events in mid-May every year.
The theme of IMD 2020 is "Museums for Equality: Diversity and Inclusion". The potential of museums to create meaningful experiences for peoples of all origins and backgrounds is central to their social value.
An increasing public expectation has catalysed a conversation around museums' potentials in the form of exhibitions, conferences, performances, education programmes, and initiatives created. With the theme "Museums for Equality: Diversity and Inclusion", International Museum Day 2020 aims at becoming a rallying point to both celebrate the diversity of perspectives that make up the communities and personnel of museums, and champion tools for identifying and overcoming bias in what they display and the stories they tell.
While museums in Hong Kong have different arrangements due to the COVID-19 situation*, we are offering more than just a visit!
This year, International Museum Day in Hong Kong is scheduled for 16-17 May 2020 (Saturday and Sunday). The 18 museums and venues under the LCSD and 24 other participating units have joined hands to enrich the online platform to provide the public with other exciting and refreshing ways to see, "visit", explore and experience the museums.
We have put on corresponding online activities and resources, e.g. pamphlets, audio guide, multimedia programmes, etc. Enjoy your museum visits at home or anywhere to discover the wonderful stories and experience the diverse and inclusive museum experience!

International Museum Day 2019, Hong Kong
Museums as Cultural Hubs: The Future of Tradition
In 1977, the International Council of Museums (ICOM) designated 18 May as the annual International Museum Day (IMD) to raise public awareness of the important role that museums play in society. The Leisure and Cultural Services Department has responded to this important appeal since 2001 by organising IMD events in mid-May every year.
The theme of IMD 2019 will focus on "Museums as Cultural Hubs: The future of tradition". The role of museums in society is changing. Museums keep reinventing themselves in their quest for becoming more interactive, audience-focused, community-oriented, flexible, adaptable and mobile agencies. They have become cultural hubs functioning as platforms where creativity combines with knowledge and where visitors can also co-create, share and interact.
While preserving their primary missions – collecting, conservation, communication, research, exhibition – museums have transformed their practices to remain closer to the communities they serve. Today they look for innovative ways to tackle contemporary social issues and conflict. By acting locally, museums can also advocate and mitigate global problems, striving to meet the challenges of today's society proactively. As institutions at the heart of society, museums have the power to establish dialogue between cultures, to build bridges for a peaceful world and to define a sustainable future.
As museums increasingly grow into their roles as cultural hubs, they are also finding new ways to honour their collections, their histories and their legacies, creating traditions that will have new meaning for future generations and relevance for an increasingly diverse contemporary audience at a global level. This transformation, which will have a profound impact on museum theory and practice, also forces us to rethink the value of museums and to question the ethical boundaries that define the very nature of our work as museum professionals.
At once a focal point for the community and an integral part of a global network, museums offer a platform for translating local communities' needs and views into a global context.
This year, International Museum Day in Hong Kong is scheduled for 18-19 May 2019, and over those two days visitors will be admitted free* to most of the local participating venues,
where a wide range of educational and entertaining programmes will be held. Come and be inspired!
(*except for special exhibitions and programmes, which have an admission charge)

ICE HKA G&S “Shaping Our Future City 2019: Presentation-cum-Exhibition”
Following the success of ICE 200 Shaping Our Future City from last year, a half-year campaign, namely “Shaping Our Future City 2019”, has been organised for over 60 Form 4 and Form 5 students from 14 local secondary schools from January to April 2019 with the theme of “Accessibility, Connectivity and Vibrancy”. The campaign aims to inspire the youth and stimulate interest in Hong Kong’s future development and the engineering world. Supported by Government departments, local tertiary institutions and engineering firms, students have broadened their horizons with the guidance of 50 passionate civil engineering graduates and students. The campaign will culminate in a presentation-cum-exhibition at City Gallery, in which students will showcase their solutions to two challenges in Hong Kong to the public which are related to underground development and transportation infrastructure.
The campaign will culminate in a public presentation-cum-exhibition in late April at City Gallery to showcase the works done by the students and to introduce infrastructure development and civil engineering to the public. The exhibition showing some Hong Kong projects, university programme introduction and the students' proposals will be held from 19 April to 13 May 2019, and the public presentation by the students will be held on 27 April 2019. 16th Venice Biennale International Architecture Exhibition - Hong Kong Response Exhibition: "Vertical Fabric: Density in Landscape"
Looking down on Hong Kong’s Central from the Victoria Peak, one could find that the city’s vertical fabric creates a wave of towers springing up from the sloping terrain down to the harbour front, spreading along the water edge as a belt of tightly woven texture.
The Hong Kong Response Exhibition is a continuation of the Collateral Event of 16th International Architecture Exhibition - La Biennale di Venezia, Vertical Fabric: density in landscape. Responding to the theme on “Freespace”, the exhibition demonstrates the urban conditions of Hong Kong and explores the theme of freespace through towers.
By installing 116 towers marching along the patio extending into the exhibition rooms, the Hong Kong Response Exhibition’s vertical fabric illustrates the compactness of Hong Kong’s urban form.

Under the trend of climate change, it is foreseeable that more typhoons with such magnitude would be formed in the coming decades. Readiness should thus be built among the professions to develop a resilient approach towards the issue, and planners and landscape architects would be taking an indispensable role in bringing resilient changes to our urban landscape.
The Hong Kong Institute of Planners, the Hong Kong Institute of Landscape Architects and Planning Department of the HKSAR Government are going to co-organize the symposium to review the implications and lessons from typhoon Mangkhut and the possible responses from planners and landscape architects.

International Museum Day 2018, Hong Kong
Hyperconnected Museums: New Approaches, New Publics
In 1977, the International Council of Museums (ICOM) designated 18 May as the annual International Museum Day (IMD) to raise public awareness of the important role that museums play in society. The Leisure and Cultural Services Department has responded to this important appeal since 2001 by organising IMD events in mid-May every year. The theme of IMD 2018 is "Hyperconnected Museums: New Approaches, New Publics". With the constant advances in information technology, our communications and connections with one another become more complex and diverse every day. Museums are an inherent part of our local communities, cultural landscape and natural environment, so they are also committed to following the current trends. In order to enhance the public's understanding of, and connection with, museums, they have to develop new approaches in interpreting their exhibits, and explore new opportunities through social media to enrich the audience's viewing experience. These new approaches will allow audiences to interact with the exhibits and with each other. However, not all these new connections are due to technology. As museums strive to maintain their relevance in society, they also make an effort to organise cooperative projects focusing on the local community and different social groups to engage new audiences and strengthen connections with them.
This year, IMD in Hong Kong is scheduled for 12-13 May 2018. Over these two days, visitors will be admitted free* to most of the local participating venues, where a wide range of educational and entertaining programmes will be held. Come and be inspired!
(*except for special exhibitions and programmes, which have an admission charge)

PROFESSIONAL SEMINAR SERIES Toward a “Green-Smart” City: How ICT Can Help Tackle Local and Global Environmental Challenges
Multiple indicators indicate that maintaining Hong Kong’s environmental sustainability is becoming an increasingly challenging task with a rising trend of carbon emissions. This situation may be improved substantially with extensive adoption of a smart city concept. Information and communications technology (ICT), when effectively brought into urban development, can facilitate more efficient resource and infrastructure management and thus be an operative reducer of overall carbon intensity in our urban systems. Recently, such a “green” aspect of a smart city has received increasing attention, particularly in the areas of energy, buildings, and transportation - which are all dominant sources of carbon emissions in Hong Kong.

2016 International Museum Day, Hong Kong
Date: 14 May 2016(Sat) to 15 May 2016(Sun)
Back in 1977, the International Council of Museums (ICOM) designated 18 May as the annual International Museum Day (IMD) to raise public awareness of the role that museums play in society. The Leisure and Cultural Services Department has responded to this important appeal since 2001 by organising IMD events in mid-May every year.
The theme of the 2016 event is ‘Museums and Cultural Landscapes'. Cultural landscapes are properties of human culture which, interweaving nature and history, represent the ‘combined products of nature and of man'. Closely associated with our life and the society to which we belong, cultural landscapes are constantly changing. Museums have always conducted work on their collections, research, exhibitions and education. Under the growing influence of current trends, museums can today no longer merely focus on their collections: they need to go beyond their traditional boundaries and take responsibility for conserving the surrounding environment in the society in which they operate. Only then can they undertake a more active and significant role in the issues involved in facilitating the protection of cultural landscapes.
This year, International Museum Day in Hong Kong is scheduled for 14-15 May 2016, and over those two days visitors will be admitted free to most of the local participating venues, where a wide range of educational and entertaining programmes will be held. Come and be inspired! For details, please visit http://www.museums.gov.hk/IMD2016 or see the announcements of individual museums.

Planning and Engineering Study for Tuen Mun Areas 40 and 46 and the Adjoining Areas
Tuen Mun Areas 40 and 46 will connect with the Hong Kong – Zhuhai – Macao Bridge Hong Kong Boundary Crossing Facilities and North Lantau via the Tuen Mun – Chek Lap Kok Link, which will also link up with the proposed Tuen Mun Western Bypass to the Northwest New Territories. The enhanced accessibility of Tuen Mun Areas 40 and 46 will provide opportunities for optimizing development potential. Hence, a comprehensive review and planning of the land uses in the areas are required.
The Planning Department (PlanD) and the Civil Engineering and Development Department (CEDD) jointly commissioned the Study. It aims to formulate appropriate land uses and development parameters for areas under the Study, and to produce a Recommended Outline Development Plan (RODP) and Recommended Layout Plans as a basis to guide the future development.
Community Engagement (CE) will be conducted in two stages. The two-month Stage 1 CE, which focuses on collecting community’s views on the proposed land use for the Potential Development Areas (PDAs) will last until 16 November 2015. The views collected would duly be taken into consideration in formulating the draft RODP in the next stage of the Study. A Study website (http://www.tm4046.hk) has been established to provide a convenient channel for promulgation of CE materials and events. The Stage 1 CE Digest can be downloaded from the Study website.
The Stage 1 CE includes, amongst other CE events and activities, a Focus Group Meeting (FGM) with the Logistics and Green Industry Sectors to collect their views on the proposed land use. The FGM will be organised on 9 Oct 2015 at the City Gallery with details as follow:

Wan Chai North and North Point Harbourfront Areas- Feasibility Study
The Wan Chai North and North Point harbourfront is a valuable stretch of reclaimed land centrally located within the Victoria Harbour, presenting a rare opportunity to ‘re-connect’ people to the waterfront. To get prepared for realising an attractive, connected, vibrant and sustainable new harbourfront for public enjoyment, the Planning Department commissioned the Urban Design Study for the Wan Chai North and North Point Harbourfront Areas (the Study) in January 2015 to guide the detailed planning and design for this area. To ensure timely incorporation of public views, a two-stage Public Engagement (PE) is incorporated in the study process.
The Stage 1 PE is mainly to gather public views on the urban design framework which covers the design objectives, key issues and urban design concepts. The Stage 2 PE is to consult the public on harbourfront enhancement proposals. The Stage 1 PE has been launched in mid June 2015 and will last until mid August 2015. In the meantime, the Study website http://wcnnpuds.hk has been set up, and the Stage 1 PE Digest can be downloaded from the Study website.
The Stage 1 PE includes, amongst other PE events and activities, a Focus Group Meeting (FGM) with the Professional Institutes to collect their views, comments and feedbacks on the Study. The FGM will be organised on 13 July 2015 at the City Gallery with details as follow:

International Museum Day 2015, Hong Kong
p>The International Council of Museums (ICOM) designated the 18th of May of each year as International Museum Day (IMD) since 1977. From 2001 onwards, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department has annually organised International Museum Day, Hong Kong in mid-May with the aim of raising public awareness of the roles and functions of museums in society.Aside from that, museums constantly face changes and challenges that require them to find new strategies to attract visitors towards more accessible collections. The theme for IMD 2015 is “Museums for a sustainable society". Nowadays, people recognise that natural resources are limited so we should live sustainably and develop our society in a way that takes into consideration of what and how Mother Nature can cope. In order to develop towards a sustainable society, it requires new rationale and people need to adapt to new ways of living. Museums, in this transition, take a strong position.
In celebration of IMD 2015 and as part of the thematic exhibition currently held at our Gallery on “City Impression@Connectivity – On the Right Track”, City Gallery is organizing a parent-child workshop “The Peak Tram Past and Now” on 16 May 2015 (Saturday) in aim to provide a platform for parents and children to explore the history and development of the Peak Tram through making of handicrafts. Come and join the interesting handicraft making together! Participants can also join the City Gallery’s guided tour to understand the town planning development in Hong Kong.

Talk: The Path Towards Introducing Waste Charging in Hong Kong
Although Asian cities like Taipei and Seoul are successful in driving waste reduction through quantity-based waste charging, many people worry it will be extremely difficult for Hong Kong to do so. Is that true?
The talk is part of the 2015 WYNG Masters Award Exhibition - What a Waste. The WYNG Masters Award is a non-profit photography award initiated to both spark awareness and engage the public on socially relevant issues of great import to Hong Kong. In the 2014/2015 cycle, the focus of the WYNG Masters Award is on the theme of WASTE. Waste relates contextually to the way we behave in this materialistic, consumptive society, as well as to the material generated in the process. Effective and efficient waste management has become an important environmental justice issue. There is a growing market in the trans-boundary movement of hazardous waste from developed to developing countries, a result of the 'not in my backyard' attitude. Waste is a global problem making awareness building and education essential goals.
A study released by the United Nations in 2013 predicted that by 2017 the number of electronic equipment and appliances being disposed of will triple. Meanwhile, our modern 'Throw Away’ society has contributed to the creation of the world’s most well known marine landfill – the Pacific Trash Vortex. Here in Hong Kong over 6 million tonnes of municipal waste is disposed of each year - a 20% increase over the past 10 years. This increase has occurred much faster than anyone expected, placing Hong Kong's landfills under enormous pressure. Its three landfills are expected to be full by the end of this decade, making it clear that Hong Kong needs a more sustainable waste management policy. There are many options available from prevention, re-using, recycling, energy recovery to disposal. It is time for Hong Kong to take ownership of its waste, for its people to alter their waste generation habits and effective solutions for waste disposal adopted.

Young Planners Group 13th Anniversary Event: Public Forum on FOOD PLANNING Policy
“Food is a sustaining and enduring necessity” and oftentimes, the topic of food as the basic essentials for life is often neglected in professional planning interest. Food planning not only concerns how food is made, transported and distributed in the city, but also focuses on how to achieve equality in the process. The food system plays a vital part of community and regional economies; however, many agricultural lands are threatened by new town developments, and many urban market places are threatened by urban renewals. Hence, the capacity to produce and supply food for local and regional markets is reaching the threshold.
As Hong Kong aspires to become Asia’s World City, it is important to include food planning in the city’s agenda to ensure food justice among important facets of community life. There is an imminent need for planning professionals to implement proposals to suggest possible alternatives and ways to strengthen and promote agricultural activities in the city, and to find ways to collaborate the processes of food planning and urban renewal together. In connection with the 13th Anniversary of Hong Kong Institute of Planners – Young Planners Group, a special event to investigate the farming practice and food planning in Hong Kong will be held: a Public Forum on Saturday 21/6/2014.

City Impression@Connectivity
The Planning Department and the City Gallery has launched the ‘City Impression’ series since 2013 with an objective to reveal the city of Hong Kong in many different aspects through thematic exhibitions, workshops and other activities.
‘City Impression@Connectivity’ is a collaborated project between the Planning Department and the Hong Kong Design Institute. The project is an assignment for the students of HKDI in exploring the connectivity between people and urban space. In two study groups, the students examined connectivity between the disables and the City as research bases to develop ideas for their design works for the visually impaired and urban mental disease patients as target groups. We hope the series of activities can narrow the distance between minority disable groups and urban space in order to jointly build up our future community.
From Point to Point

International Museum Day 2014, Hong Kong
Museum Collections Make Connections
The International Council of Museums (ICOM) designated the 18th of May of each year as International Museum Day (IMD) in 1977. Since 2001, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department has annually organised International Museum Day, Hong Kong in mid-May with the aim of raising public awareness of the roles and functions of museums in society.
Museums constantly face changes and challenges that require them to find new strategies to attract visitors towards more accessible collections. The theme for IMD 2014 is “Museum Collections Make Connections”, which reminds us that a museum is an institution that preserves and communicates the past, while remaining grounded in the present. Museums form a link between generations, allowing those in the present and the future to better comprehend their origins and history. This theme also emphasizes the importance for museums to revamp traditional methods of presentation of their collections so as to remain in touch with the public. In this way, it is hoped museums can create bonds between visitors, generations and cultures from around the world.
A fantastic array of special programmes will be organised at all Leisure and Cultural Services Department museums and other participating venues on 17 and 18 May 2014 for public enjoyment. Come and join the fun! For details of IMD 2014 activities in Hong Kong, please visit www.lcsd.gov.hk/imd2014 from early April or see the announcements of individual museums.
